Saint John
Saint John (the Beloved because of his great innocence and purity)—the only apostle who was present at Jesus’ crucifixion, and the one to whom Jesus entrusted his mother Mary. John died of old age instead of being martyred for his faith. When in old age he was asked to preach, John would address the assembly with the words “My little children, love one another.” When asked why he always used the same words, he replied, “Because it is the word of the Lord, and if you keep it you do enough.” Feast day: December 27 Symbols: eagle, chalice, kettle, armor
